10 Reasons NOT to get an American Dirus dog
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, Dec. 6, 2024
Over the last few days, we’ve been talking about all the wonderful reasons why American Dirus dogs make great family pets.
Their calm, quiet, gentle, submissive, loving, and intelligent personalities are ideal for many homes.
However, there are some real reasons why some people would not fit well with this breed.
Here are ten of them.
American Dirus Dogs are…
- A giant size.
- Not outgoing.
- High-shedding.
- Expensive.
- A breed in progress.
- Not a purebred dog breed.
- sensitive to human emotion.
- A rare breed with a large waiting list.
- Not interested in fetch, frisbee, agility, or other high energy tasks.
- not highly treat or play motivated resulting in different training needs.
If you are looking for a general, all-purpose, all-around happy-go-lucky sort of dog, then the American Dirus may not be right for you.
We want you to acquire the perfect companion for your family.
That leads us to make sure your expectations are similar to the reality that makes up our wonderful dogs.
If your family’s ideal dog aligns with
the Dire Wolf Project’s ideals,
you are in the right place!
Here is an article I wrote detailing the above reasons in more depth.

And when you are ready to get the process started, the first step is to complete the puppy adoption questionnaire so that we can get to know you better.
