A Heartbeat is Nothing to Toy With
By Jay Stoeckl, Cardiac Care Unit Intern, April 23, 2025
Jennifer and I have switched roles—
As many of you know, Jennifer is taking on the DireWolf Express and I…
…well, I’m here.
Whenever puppies are about to go out on the Puppy Express, Jennifer brings in the box of go-items to be included with each of the folders. This includes gifts like the tote bag, a scent blanket for the puppy to settle in with, and a heartbeat toy.
A heartbeat toy…
What’s this?—you say.
A heartbeat toy is a small, puppy-sized stuffed animal with a battery-operated heartbeat mechanism that goes inside it so that the puppy, now alone in a new home, does not feel so alone.
The heartbeat toy, if it works, feels a lot like a real sleeping companion the puppy can snuggle up with. So, it’s not a toy really, but a pacifier, a baby blanket to help the puppy sleep alone.
Nothing to toy with.
So, I looked at one of these with a tinge of skepticism (Everything Jennifer puts together is met with skepticism LOL).
Then I realized that she had included one with our singleton puppy, Alice. If anyone needs a mock companion to snuggle up to, it would be Alice.
Alice only has us (and we’re very busy), and she has Yeti who generally spends the night with her, but leaves her alone through long stints during the day.
This is Alice.
She looks very lonesome all by herself, don’t you agree?
That’s why we attempt to spend time with her right there inside her pen, playing baby shark and other silly things adults are not supposed to admit to doing. That’s why we impersonate other puppies with our baby-shark glove or play tug with things Alice can hold in her mouth.
But we cannot be there all night. Poor Alice!
So Jennifer brought in the heartbeat toy, put in the batteries, pushed the button, and…
Ga-gunk, ga-gunk, ga-gunk, ga-gunk…
Well, so what! The thing beats like a heart. And?…
And? We put the pink, plastic beating thingy back into the stuffed puppy and set it in with Alice.
I think the following photo gives up the answer. Take a look!
Alice snuggles up to the thing every time she goes to sleep! So much for skepticism, huh?
But here’s the catch!
If you want one of these heartbeat toys, I believe there is only one way to get one.
Purchase a puppy.
That’s it! The heartbeat toy comes with a special door prize. A living, breathing bundle of unconditional love like the one you see above. A few very special puppies are still available…. in case you’re wondering.
