Application DENIED!
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, Dec. 9, 2024
At the Dire Wolf Project, our mission is to ensure that each of our puppies is placed in a home that will provide the love, care, and stability they need to thrive.
We take this responsibility very seriously.
It is the cornerstone of everything we do.
Recently, we have been reminded of the importance of being transparent about our expectations for prospective puppy owners.
While we know our community is filled with individuals and families who share our vision, it is important to reiterate that adopting an American Dirus dog is not a right—
It is a privilege.
Our process is designed to identify homes where our dogs will flourish.
To this end, we carefully evaluate each application to ensure that applicants meet the high standards we have set for this breed.
Unfortunately, there are times when applications are denied.
This decision is never made lightly.
Some of the key reasons applications may be declined include:
- Incomplete or vague responses: We expect applicants to be forthcoming and detailed in sharing about themselves, their household, and their experience with dogs.
- Incompatible household dynamics: Certain environments, including those with dominant or aggressive breeds, may not be suitable for an American Dirus puppy due to temperament mismatches and potential safety concerns.
- Lack of transparency: We look for applicants who are open and honest. Attempts to withhold information or provide unclear answers signal a lack of trustworthiness, which is vital in this process.
To be clear, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our dogs.
This means we have an obligation to say “no” when we feel it is in the best interest of the puppy or the prospective owner.
Our dogs deserve nothing less, and we stand by our commitment to their welfare.
This weekend, we received a very disturbing response to a rejection letter.
His application started out decent.
He lives in Oklahoma with five people in the household with a baby of around 1 year old.
But then a red flag popped up.
This particular person owns both a Pitbull and a Cane Corso.
These two breeds have been bred for centuries to fight through pain and fear.
Of course, there are many loving dogs within these breeds, but both breeds can be dominant toward other dogs and not back down when a dog retreats.
Our sensitive American Dirus dogs would not thrive in an environment where heavy muscular dominant dogs have already established themselves in the home.
A person who wants one of our gentle dogs, but only has fighting dog breeds in the home also suggests a certain type of person not suited for our dogs.
But, I am always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt, even though I’m on alert now.
Later on, he mentions that he wants a giant, white male that he will not neuter.
And that he is super active and wants his new dog to be able to do agility.
Couple that with giving only vague answers or no answers at all, and we have no choice but to reject his application.
It’s a good thing we did, too!
My suspicions were uncovered when we received his very vulgar reply.
Never in all my years of breeding dogs have I received such a sick and callous answer to a rejection letter.
I guess he didn’t mind going out in a blaze of glory.
Maybe his ego was hurt?
Either way, this person will never get a dog from the Dire Wolf Project.
And for very good reason.

WARNING!!
It is not for the faint of heart.
Click at your own risk.
For those more reasonable people considering applying for an American Dirus dog, we encourage you to approach the process with sincerity, openness, and respect for what we are trying to accomplish.
Our goal is not just to find homes for our dogs,
But to build a community of individuals who deeply value the unique nature of this breed and the vision of the Dire Wolf Project.
We thank you for understanding and supporting our unwavering dedication to the future of the American Dirus breed.
Together, we continue to uphold the highest standards and ensure that every puppy is given the best possible chance for a happy and fulfilling life.
