Do Dogs Feel Love?--An Intellectual Response!
By Jay Stoeckl, April 30, 2025
Imagine what would happen if a scholar came down from the sky with the very answers you were looking for.
I mean, seriously! She appeared on my email out of nowhere!
This is not a Karen type who just wanted to assert a perspective in order to make herself be heard.
NO,,, this person’s credentials are staggering amidst lesser scholarly types like myself.
“Dr. H” responded to my article Do Dogs Feel Love? as if she had written a thesis on the subject. Here is just a portion of what she had to say:
Loved your story, thank you. But, for the record, dogs (as well as cats and most mammals) have very well developed limbic systems, that part of the brain that generates emotion, empathy, LOVE and LOYALTY. Now Alice is pretty young and her limbic system has far more development to go - but it may be kicking in a little now, from the unprovoked kiss you received. Dogs can feel love and loyalty very intensely, some would say more than people can.
Dr. H went on to talking about her relationship with her dog, a recent loss, and how he was truly empathetic towards her whenever she was in pain.
Crying over something tragic, her boy came up to her, studying her emotions, and placed a paw on her lap, When she continued to cry, he tried the other paw.
Apparently, the first paw was not doing the job of comforting her!
“Dogs can feel LOVE and LOYALTY very intensely, some would say more than people can.”
Look at the world around us. Ever see a dog flip you off out a car window because it did not like the way you were driving???
Dr. H, I would TOTALLY AGREE!
Dogs put the vast majority of humans to shame.
If you talk to Jennifer long enough, she would tell you that it is the LOVE and LOYALTY that is the main purpose of the Dire Wolf Project in the first place.
We’re not breeding dogs as a business. It does not make us any money. This is a sort of calling to help fill the emptiness we feel as humans. Dogs are not only more loving and loyal, they are far more intuitive—perceptive really.
They understand the world and humans at a deeper level.
Without such a presence in humanity since the beginning of time, just imagine how much less we would all be if there had been no canine entities teaching us how unconditional love actually works!
Thank you, Dr. H. for your perspective on this topic!
