Every Dog Food Option Explained
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, Jan. 19, 2026
Somewhere in the pet food aisle,
common sense quietly weeps.
Because there you are, standing in front of a wall of dog food that looks like it was designed by a marketing committee trapped in a fluorescent maze.
One bag is screaming “WOLF INSIDE!”
Another is whispering sweet nothings that sound like “GENTLY COOKED LOVE.”
A third is trying to seduce you with words like “ancestral,” “holistic,” “limited ingredient,” “human-grade,” and “freeze-dried raw” like it’s a spiritual awakening.
And you are just trying to answer one simple question:
What am I supposed to feed my dog?
You don’t want the answer that sounds the nicest, or the bag with the prettiest mountain range, or the font on the packaging that has most confidence.
You want the real answer.
Because if you have ever stood there long enough, reading labels, comparing protein percentages, squinting at ingredient lists like they are ancient runes, you know what happens next.
You start bargaining with yourself.
“This one says ‘real meat first’… so that must mean it’s good.”
“This one says ‘grain-free’… so that must mean it’s better.”
“This one is expensive… so surely it’s healthier.”
“This one is convenient… and I’m tired… and my dog is hungry… and I just need to pick something.”
And the worst part is not that you picked something.
It’s that the entire dog food aisle is built to make you feel like guessing is normal.
As if feeding a carnivore should feel like decoding a riddle.
So I made the thing I wish every dog owner had the first time they stood in that aisle with a shopping cart and a pounding brain:
A comprehensive, no-fluff guide to every major dog food option on the market today:
- kibble,
- canned,
- gently cooked,
- dehydrated,
- air-dried,
- freeze-dried raw,
- frozen commercial raw,
- homemade raw,
- whole prey
I even mapped it out clearly so you can finally see the tradeoffs instead of feeling them in your nervous system.
This is the dog food compass you need.
Because once you can see where each option actually sits (in regards to health, convenience, and cost) dog food stops being mysterious and starts being… obvious.
And if you are even slightly uneasy about what you are feeding right now…
If you have ever wondered whether you chose the “best” option or simply the most persuasive label…
If you have ever felt that tiny flicker of doubt, then smothered it with, “Well… everyone feeds this…”
You need to watch this Monday’s Movie.
The only problem is…
I haven’t finished it yet!!
I’m almost done, though.
I really am.
It’ll likely be completed later today.
By nook or by crook, I’ll get that guide uploaded for you.
And you’ll know the moment it comes out because… of course you subscribed to our YouTube channel, RIGHT?!
