My new friends and a soft blanket
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, Oct. 22, 2024
Today was just 'nother day for me, Shelby.
Nothing special.
I woke up in my cozy den like always.
I stretched real big when I saw Papa Jay.
Why did he come so early today?
An hour earlier than normal!
He cleaned up my pen and gave me extra pats.
I wiggled happily, ‘cause who doesn’t like extra pats?
He said somethin' 'bout meeting new friends, but I didn’t quite understand.
Friends?
I already had my brothers and sisters.
What more could I need?
Then, it happened.
The gate opened, and two new people walked in.
Ohhh, I love meeting new people!
Just like my brothers and sisters, I wanted pets, too!
But somethin' was different...
They pointed at me!
Me? Why me?
I didn’t know why I was so special.
But I was curious, so I wagged my tail and did my best to be the good girl Mama Jennifer taught me to be.
They picked me up, and ohhh, I got so excited!
I wiggled just a little, not too much, ‘cause I didn’t wanna hurt them with my big paws.
Instead, I gave 'em soft kisses on their cheeks.
They liked that—I could tell!
The way they cuddled me was sooooo nice.
Soft tummy rubs... mmm, my favorite.
They smelled different than anyone I knew before, but their gentle touch and soft voices made me feel happy.
Something new and exciting was happening. I could feel it!
One of them tussled my fur, and it tickled, making me wiggle all over.
Then, they wrapped me up in a blanket—one that smelled like Papa Jay and Mama Jennifer.
Oh, that was cozy.
But when I looked around, I didn’t see them.
Where did they go?
Suddenly, I heard a big roar!
The car started, but I didn’t feel scared ‘cause my new friend held me real gentle inside the soft blanket.
I felt the ground move under me, but I wasn’t movin'!
It was so strange!
We drove away, down the driveway.
Away from the only home I ever knew.
But, ya know what?
I wasn’t sad.
I liked these new friends, and I wanted to learn more about them.
The roar of the car and the way it swayed as the trees passed by the window made me feel sleepy.
My eyes got heavy... so heavy.
I closed them, snuggled into my soft blanket, and felt my new friend’s heartbeat.
I might miss my forest family later, but for now, I was happy, warm, and safe in my new friend’s arms.
We’re going to a new home.
They said it’s a forest in Colorado where the sun shines after the snow, and the rain gives drinks to all the wildflowers in the summer.
I dunno what my life’s gonna be like there, but I’m excited to find out all about it!
For now, I’m just happy to be me, Shelby.

Shelby’s new momma tells us that she has been perfect in the car on the first part of the long two-day drive home.
We are so proud of Shelby for being a brave girl.
It’s hard for a puppy to leave the only world they’ve ever known and embark on a new adventure.
So, knowing that Shelby instantly loved her new family makes my heart swell.
It’s hard to say good-bye to the babies we’ve raised from birth, but it’s all worth it when two hearts find each other and become entwined for life.
