She Trusted Me Completely—And Then Everything Changed

Apple Cider is on
the adventure of a lifetime!
A silver whirlwind of luscious, impossibly soft fur, this five-and-a-half-month-old American Dirus puppy is taking to the skies, soaring from one corner of the country to the other.
Seattle, Washington —> Tampa, Florida
Her new owner awaits, a seasoned trainer who sees what I already know:
Apple Cider is something special.
No, scratch that—she's extraordinary.
She’s got a mind sharper than the teeth of a saber-toothed cat.
One trial—just one—and she’s got it.
Whatever the task, the moment she understands what you want, she executes it flawlessly, her golden eyes sparkling with excitement.
It’s not just intelligence.
It’s pure joy.
She learns with her whole heart.
And when she succeeds, her entire being radiates with delight.
This is a puppy genius.
A prodigy wrapped in fluff.
And she has no idea just how bright her future is about to become.
But before that bright future begins, she must brave the unknown.
Flying across the country is no small feat.
Especially for a puppy who has never known life outside the towering Ponderosa pines and open spaces she calls home.
What must go through her mind as the world she knows disappears behind her?
We can’t explain to her what’s happening.
She doesn’t know that a whole new family—a whole new life—awaits her on the other side.
All she knows is now.
And right now, everything is changing.
Yet, Apple Cider is different.
She’s not just smart—she’s resilient.
She’s fearless.
And she trusts.
When I took her to Alaska Air Cargo yesterday, I was her anchor on this unfamiliar journey.
She placed all her trust in me completely.
For example, yesterday was the very first when she experienced a leash.
Imagine that—a puppy who had never once been tethered, never had to yield to anything other than her own joyful whims.
Most pups would pull, resist, or rebel.
Not Apple Cider.
The very first time she felt the pressure of the leash, she simply stopped, looked up at me, and waited for my cue.
One call, one gesture, and she understood.
Leash pressure means return.
No struggle, no fight—just understanding.
It was like watching genius unfold before my eyes.
And then there was the first time in a crate.
Another moment where most puppies would panic, scratch, or cry.
But Apple Cider?
She stepped inside, settled in, and, after giving my fingers a few tender kisses through the bars, rested her head on the plastic cup holder attached to the door.
She looked at me, eyes full of quiet confidence, and smiled.
What must she have been thinking?
Was she nervous?
Curious?
Excited?
I don’t know.
But what I do know is that this puppy is destined for greatness.
Sure, she has too much energy for our typically calm breed.
But her heart, her soul—oh, she has it all!
That deep emotional connection, that ability to understand, to communicate beyond mere body language.
It’s rare.
And it’s simply breathtaking to me.
It’s the reason I know she’s going to thrive in her new home.
Her journey is just beginning, and I can’t wait to hear how she blossoms.
Her new name is River, a fitting choice for a soul so full of life and movement.
She’s going to change lives, I just know it.
American Dirus dogs are unlike any others.
They are not just dogs.
There is something deeper in their hearts, something words can’t quite capture.
You have to experience it to truly understand.
Take Patch, for example. He’s calmer than his sister, Apple Cider, but just as intuitive.
Just as special.
His new family will soon learn that he doesn’t just listen—he speaks, in the silent language of the soul, through his steady gaze and quiet devotion.
And Barracuda that still yearns for a family of her own?
Sweet, loving, with a gentle femininity that makes her presence feel like a warm embrace.
These dogs are different…special.
And sometimes, the ones who get overlooked—the ones who don’t fit the mold at first glance—turn out to be the most remarkable of all.
I know this, because I’ve seen it.
I’ve seen it in Apple Cider.
And I can’t wait to hear about all the lives she’s about to change!
In all the new puppy excitement, don’t forget there are older puppies still awaiting their perfect family.
If Apple Cider and Patch can find their forever homes, so can these remaining loves.
