Organic vs. GMO
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT, OFS - Dire Wolf Project co-founder and CEO, Sept. 1, 2025
This weekend, a powerful little meme sent our Dire Wolf Project™ Facebook page into a feeding frenzy.
On one side: Everest, majestic as always, labeled “Organic.”
On the other: Colossal’s bleached, gene-hacked gray wolf labeled “GMO.”
Boom!
Internet chaos achieved. Mwahahaha!
Then came the comments.
Ohhh how the comments did not disappoint!
Alec tried to go professor-mode: “Selective breeding is genetic modification… it’s just the old-school version. Neither of these is a genuine dire wolf.”
(Us: Old school > Lab grown.)
He doubled down: “Posting this meme implies your way is closer to the real thing. It isn’t.”
(Us: Agreed. Neither method brings back actual dire wolves. )
Then came the art critics.
Magdelana dropped in a doodle of a jackal with the caption, “especially while real dire wolves looked like this. Both creators of dogs in the main post are just creating stuff for Game of Thrones nerds.”
(Confession: I laughed so hard I nearly choked. We breed actual family dogs, not fantasy props, my dear. But sure, tell me again how my dogs are “for nerds.”)
Amber jumped in with a full-on science drop: “They were the final members of a distinct evolutionary branch that split from other canids 5.7 million years ago.”
To which I basically said: “Yep. Dire wolves could have been more jackal-like. And the beauty of ORGANIC breeding is we’re building genetic diversity for the future. Have you seen our skull research yet? It’s kinda a big deal.”
Cue Gamera’s gorgeous photo—handsome, wolf-masked, making their little doodle look like a sad Halloween costume.
Now here’s the thing…
While people are busy lobbing sound bites like “Game of Thrones nerds!” and “not a real dire wolf,” we’re over here quietly moving into the next phase of the Dire Wolf Project.
And let me tell you… it’s going to be wild!
I’m so excited I can hardly stand it.
This time, we are SO. FREAKIN’. CLOSE. to perfection!
Every piece is falling into place, and I cannot wait to see what’s coming.
No, scratch that—I can’t wait for YOU to see what’s coming.
You’re gonna lose your mind.
But… you’ll have to click below to find out what’s coming soon.
