World's Most Expensive Dog!
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, March 20, 2025
Brace yourselves, dog lovers and deep-pocketed collectors of the bizarre.
A "wolf dog" (and I use that term as loosely as a Chihuahua’s grip on reality) has just sold for an absolutely deranged £4.4 million!
That’s right, folks.
For the price of a luxury penthouse in London, you too could own a dog that looks less like a majestic wolf and more like a perpetually confused, overgrown teddy bear.
Meet Cadabomb Okami:
The "wolfdog" that wolves
would probably deny knowing
Here’s what the new owner believes,
"He is an extremely rare breed of dog and looks exactly like a wolf. This breed has not been sold in the world before.
"The dog was bred in the US and is extraordinary. I spent 50 million rupees on buying this pup because I am fond of dogs and like to own unique dogs and introduce them to India."
WHAT???
What is he talking about?
I’m genuinely confused.
Since when is a wolf dog a RARE BREED?!
Okami is reportedly the offspring of a Caucasian Ovcharka and a wolf.
The following is a PUREBRED Caucasian Ovcharka:
Huh… see any resemblance?
Now, let’s just pause for a moment to reflect on this pairing.
On one side, we have the Caucasian Ovcharka, arguably the most territorial dog breed on Earth, bred to wrestle bears off cliffs if necessary.
On the other side, a wolf—nature’s skittish introvert, likely questioning every life decision that led to this point.
At 30 inches tall and a whopping 165 lbs, Okami is a behemoth of a dog.
But he actually looks nothing like a wolf.
NOTHING.
This guy got majorly snowed!
You could put Okami next to a taxidermied wolf, and the only thing they’d have in common is that they both have four legs.
Wolves have piercing, highly slanted yellow eyes that cut through the soul.
This £4.4 million dog?
Droopy, dark brown eyes that scream ‘Why am I here?’
Wolves have long, tapered muzzles designed for slicing through flesh with precision.
This dog has the distinctive broad, blocky head of an Ovcharka.
And the feathering!
This dog has long, wispy hair between his toes, behind his ears, and on his rump, features you’d never find on a wild animal unless that animal was attending a costume party as "Cousin It."
Wolves don’t have feathering.
Feathering is a recessive domesticated dog trait, a 50/50 wolf cross could not produce this trait.
So, Okami is most certainly not half wolf.
If he has any wolf content, it’s very low at best.
And what’s with the cropped ears?
Those weren’t lost in the heat of battle, my friends.
That’s just the standard fashion for Caucasian Ovcharkas.
But never mind all that.
Who needs actual wolf-like appearance traits when you have a price tag that could fund a small country?!
Meanwhile, over at the Dire Wolf Project, we have giant males standing just as tall, looking infinitely more wolfish, much more “rare”, and selling for significantly less.
But hey, we don’t have red carpet premieres, so maybe that’s where we went wrong?
The world is full of baffling purchases.
Someone once paid $1.3 million for a grilled cheese sandwich with an image of the Virgin Mary on it.
Another soul spent $2.68 million on a Honus Wagner baseball card.
But £4.4 million on a dog that looks like a sleepy bear and is the genetic equivalent of an ‘ancient artifact’ sold to tourists but actually made last week in a factory?
That’s a whole new level of "why though?"
At the end of the day, Okami is not the rarest dog in the world.
He is not a groundbreaking new breed.
But here’s the best part.
You don’t have to sell your house, your car, and possibly a kidney to get a giant, well-bred, ancient wolf-lookalike dog without the baggage of questionable giant fighting dog ancestry.
The American Dirus dog exists—a breed created to look like the extinct dire wolf, with a calm, stable temperament designed for companionship, not chaos.
They stand just as tall, often taller, than this so-called ‘wolf dog,’ and they don’t come with the astronomical price tag or the behavioral nightmares.
And guess what?
Many actually look like ancient wolves.
Imagine that.
On that note, Yeti’s puppies are still preparing for their big, upcoming adventure.
I’ll let you know when these precious souls arrive.
In the meantime, I’m willing to sell my “extremely rare breed of dog that looks exactly like a wolf” named Lincoln for $6 million.
