A Curious Mind Wants to Know...
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, Jan. 29, 2025
Recently, I received another great question from a loyal Dire Wolf Project Inner Circle email subscriber.
Here’s how it went:
===
“Hi, Jennifer
“I faithfully follow your website and read about all the upcoming litters. I noticed that you tend to breed both your males and females before they reach their full maturity and growth (generally accepted to be around the age of two). Can you explain your reasoning for this? Do American Dirus dogs mature quicker, and if so why?
A curious mind.”

Again, I LOVE questions like this because the person behind such a question is genuinely curious about our breeding practices and wants to know why we follow them DESPITE what the mainstream yells at the top of their lungs about “responsible” dog breeding.
Here’s how I answered her:

“Hello Curious -
Thank you so much for this question. It is a very common question, especially from those who adhere to a "responsible breeder" mindset. And I wouldn't blame you if you held such a mindset. It has literally been drilled into our human minds for a century at least. But, it's a false narrative. The truth is there is no prize out there for being a responsible breeder. There is no "one way" or "acceptable way" of breeding responsibly. There is only nature's way vs man's way. Which way is better is played out each day by tens of thousands of dog breeders all around the world compared to the billions of wild canines thriving in harsh wild conditions sustained for millenia. Humankind should not deem to believe that our artificial (and many times arbitrary) rules are superior to nature's way. It simply isn't... and never can be.
Man is an emotional species. We feel deeply about what should and shouldn't be. And many times, our feelings get in the way of what is actually true, right, and good for the others in our care.
This is the case for first-heat breeding.
Here is an excerpt from Chapter 11 of my book, Dire Wolf Project: Creating an Extraordinary Dog Breed, which I highly recommend you read if you are at all interested in why Dire Wolf Project breeders firmly believe in nature's way of breeding, as opposed to man's way. There are many other controversial things Dire Wolf Project breeders do that cannot follow the "responsible breeder" approach. All of the reasons for them are spelled out in the book.

If you have questions about any of our breeding practices, the Dire Wolf Project book will answer them all.
In depth.
With extensive scientific resources.
And a BUNCH of logical thinking that defies the many logical fallacies often touted as “responsible breeding” by the group-think majority.
If you aren’t yet a Dire Wolf Project super fan, you will be after you read this book.
Or… you might find you hate us and never want to darken our terrible, no-good, very bad breeding practices door again.
Either way…
NOBODY ELSE does dog breeding like the Dire Wolf Project.
Love us or hate us, but before you decide… READ THE BOOK!
