Can a Wolf be 100% domesticated?
By Jennifer Stoeckl, MAT - Dire Wolf Project CEO, March 13, 2023Welcome newcomers!
If you are new to the Dire Wolf Project, please feel right at home.
My husband, Jay, and I are dedicated to sending you a helpful email every Monday through Friday.
Our mission is to fulfill the emptiness in your life by providing you with everything you need to live a happy life with your American Dirus dog.
Here is a quick name guide:
- American Dirus – the dog breed bred by the Dire Wolf Project.
- DireWolf Dog – the nickname for the dog breed bred by the Dire Wolf Project.
- Dire Wolf Project – a long term program to breed back the extinct, prehistoric dire wolf in a loving family companion dog using ONLY domesticated dog breeds.
If you weren’t aware, domesticated dog breeds are more closely related to ancient wolves that have gone extinct than they are to modern wolves living today.
The Dire Wolf Project is committed to using only domesticated dog breeds to retain these ancient wolf genetics and not mix them with the more modern evolved gray wolves living today.
This is because the dire wolf is an extinct canid that likely evolved in the Americas, much like the maned wolf from South America.
While there is no evidence that domesticated dog breeds carry ancient dire wolf genetics, we nonetheless do not want to include modern wolf DNA of any kind.
This fact places the Dire Wolf Project in the position of being THE ONLY wolf look-a-like breed to have not used modern wolves to quickly attain a wolf-like outward appearance.
That’s right… ALL other wolf look-a-like breeds are WOLFDOGS of varying percentage.
Don’t be fooled.
For years I have been collecting DNA evidence from these breeds to make sure I have the proof to back up what I am saying.
Sure enough… when a new wolf look-a-like breed pops up, the founders claim to have achieved the wolf look without breeding to any wolves.
Well, maybe they didn’t breed to wolves, but their founding dogs were high content wolf dogs.
And many breeders of these breeds continue to add mid to high content wolf dogs into the mix.
Wolf dogs are MORE dangerous than a full wolf!
Let me repeat that so you get the seriousness of the situation.
250,000 – 500,000 wolf dogs are born every year.
90% of wolf dogs are euthanized by the time they are two years old.
Wolf/wolf dog sanctuaries are full to capacity with waiting lists to get in.
Wolf dogs live a mixed-up life.
Friendly enough to approach a stranger, confused enough to attack if they feel threatened in any way.
Here is a quote from Keller & Keller’s law firm, “While some wolf hybrids are docile and non-aggressive, a higher percentage of wolf hybrids are likely to be dangerous and prone to attack humans and other animals.”
The following are wolf dog breeds, despite what you may have read on the Internet. ALL of the following link back to recent wolf ancestry and range in percentage.
Tundra Shepherd
Alaskan Noble Companion Dog
Native American Indian Dog
Tamaskan Dog
Utonagon
Northern Inuit
Blue Bay Shepherd
Czech Vicak
Saarloos wolfdog
Hierran wolfdog
Kunming wolfdog
Timber Shepherd
Nordic Shepherd
As you can see, there are many wolf dog breeds out there.
Only one wolf look-a-like breed has not resorted to breeding to wolves or wolf dogs.
The Dire Wolf Project is the ONLY wolf look-a-like breed to remain 100% domesticated dog.
True to our founder’s original dream of breeding a massive “big bad wolf” type of dog in a sweet, loving, gentle family companion dog, we have used the following dog breeds to create the beautiful wolfish traits you see in many of our American Dirus dogs today:
- German Shepherd Dog
- Alaskan Malamute
- Irish Wolfhound
- English Mastiff
- Akita
- Anatolian Shepherd Dog
- Great Pyrenees
- Labrador Retriever
- Golden Retriever
Here’s what that combination of breeds produced over 30 years of breeding:
The Dire Wolf Project is dedicated to breeding only domesticated dogs in order to continue to take advantage of the 15,000 years of dog domestication.
As Dire Wolf Project founder, Lois Schwarz, explains, "The wolf is not a domesticated animal; it is a wild animal. Dogs are domesticated and no one should breed any domesticated animals with wild animals. It defeats the purpose of being domesticated."
Hundreds of DireWolf Dogs have now been DNA tested. You can view a comprehensive list of them here: DNA Health Database.
