She JUST gave birth to fourteen puppies…

I have a surprise!

A quiet one, mind you.

it’s not the kind of surprise we announce with fanfare and fireworks.

But it’s a powerful one nonetheless.

In fact, one that could change the course of the breed forever.

Because yesterday…

Galena gave birth to 14 puppies!

Fourteen!

That’s right… fourteen beautiful, strong, healthy pups, all safely delivered and thriving at her side.

Only one other female, Sprinkle, in my entire breeding career has carried a litter this large, making Galena now the second to earn this incredible badge of maternal strength.

We are so proud of her.

She did what ancient dire wolves must have done on the cusp of spring, bringing forth a litter of potential, each pup a mystery, each heartbeat part of something larger.

But there’s something special about this litter you should know.

This litter was NOT bred for the waiting list.

It wasn’t bred to fill requests or match preferences.

This litter was bred… for science.

Specifically, to improve the overall health of the American Dirus™ dog breed as a whole.

We’re using this match to conduct what geneticist Dr. George A. Padgett, DVM, called a “Trial Mating.”

Here’s what that means in plain terms:

  • Galena is the full sister to a male we believe carries the recessive gene for hypothyroidism.

  • She was bred to Dublin, the son of that same male.

  • Neither parent has ever shown signs of the disease, but both are suspected carriers based on family history.

  • By mating these two dogs together, we are testing a hypothesis: Do they carry and pass on the gene?

  • And more importantly… how do we stop it from moving forward?

In other words, this is a purpose-driven litter, not a pet placement one.

Here’s how it works.

Based on the pedigree and statistical probability, we believe that:

  • About 2 of the 14 pups may develop hypothyroidism later in life if both parents are indeed carriers, which we suspect.

  • The other 12 remaining puppies will either be carriers or clear.

  • And from that outcome, we will know which pups we can continue forward with, and which lines must end.

This is how to eliminate genetic disease when DNA tests fall short.

You see, the form of hypothyroidism that affects some of the dogs in our breed does not show up on Embark panels.

(We already test for Embark’s genetic hypothyroidism and our lines are clear.)

But the type of hypothyroidism we track is elusive, and growing in reported incidence rate over time.

Unfortunately, it can only be uncovered through observation, analysis, and time.

So, here’s what we’re planning:

  • We will retain 4–6 of the strongest, most promising pups from this litter.

  • The remaining puppies will be placed locally with trusted families, so we can track their long-term health carefully.

  • None of these puppies will be made available to the public or sold to the waiting list.

  • And every one of you will be kept in the loop as we report on this line in the years to come.

This is what it means to protect the pack.

Not just to breed for beauty or companionship or even good temperament (though we do all of those things)… but to chart a course through the genetic wilderness with our eyes wide open and our hearts firmly fixed on the future.

We're not afraid of what we might find in this litter, because we trust the process.

And we trust our dogs.

And most of all, we trust you, our Inner Circle, to understand why this places the Dire Wolf Project™ on a completely different playing field than any other breed on the planet.

We stand alone as the only breed to reject the “wait to breed” model.

We are also the only breed to openly share all of our reported health issues with the public.

We don’t rely on generic vet reports for our breed’s own health statistics.

We track our own.

We have the most responsive owners of any breed out there, willing to share any and all health concerns with us, so our database is robust and as accurate as it can be.

That means we can share REAL and up-to-date, breed-wide health statistics with you, which keeps you informed and ready.

All animal breeders have health issues in their lines… only the truly responsible ones are willing to speak about them openly presenting real stats to back up any claims.

Testing for random health concerns is NOT enough!

Any health testing must be targeted based on the needs within the breed.

Hypothyroidism is by far the most prevalent health concern in the Dire Wolf Project™, sitting at just under 11% reported incidence rate over the last ten years.

(The average percentages for hypothyroidism across all dogs is .4%-.8%.)

Dog breeds with high levels of hypothyroidism range from 13.1% in Dobermans - 25% in Golden Retrievers.

We are now approaching that.

Unfortunately, there is no “health test” that can predict whether a particular breeding dog will develop hypothyroidism.

And “waiting to breed” a dog until 5 years old to “make sure” it’s clear wastes valuable time, reduces generational turnover, and risks narrowing the gene pool prematurely.

The Dire Wolf Project™ stands ALONE as the only breeding program out there to outright reject the “wait to breed” model.

And we are one of the only breeds I know of to dare to detail our disease elimination process.

And that is worth protecting.

If this kind of purpose-driven breeding resonates with you…
