Strong instinct for cleanliness

Potty training starts at the breeder’s home when the puppies are very young.

It takes a mindfulness of cleanliness.

First, the momma dog keeps her puppies clean by stimulating their bowels, not allowing the den to become messy.

Then, a breeder who understands a dog’s natural tendency to not soil their sleeping area can diligently clean their whelping pads every day.

This helps the puppies form a habit of sleeping and playing in a space that is clean and tidy.

When the puppies grow, their space grows, too.

If puppies have a large enough space, they will instinctively go potty away from their den and eating area.

A smart breeder will understand that and coordinate the space to accommodate that tendency… lengthening the kennel area, as needed, so the puppies have to travel to a potty spot away from their main area.

Well, the Monster Movie litter puppies have really learned to keep themselves clean.

As I mentioned in an earlier email, on these hot days we bring the puppies inside where it is air conditioned.

In the house, their area is only a 4’ x 4’ space.

With nine giant puppies, sixteen square feet isn’t enough room to travel away from their spot to piddle.

Godzilla was the first one to call out into the void beyond his den space at anyone who would listen that he needed to go outside to potty.

He had to go, but he did NOT want to go in his sleeping space.

What a smart boy!

A good breeder will not ignore that signal and help him.

I scooped his little quivering body up and walked him outside.

The moment I set him down, he found a spot to potty.

This is remarkable communication skills from such a young puppy.

He was so smart to know that calling out would mean someone would help him.

The other puppies must’ve saw what he did, because when I placed him back inside the cool den, all the rest of the puppies suddenly had to go, too.

One by one, I walked each puppy outside to potty.

Each one piddled right away, as if potty training was second nature to them.

Since that time, each puppy always announces when they need to go.

If you keep this up when you receive your new puppy, potty training should be a breeze.
